REVOLTS IN THE MAGHREB1 (First Draft) The events unfolding in the Middle East and North Africa (subsequently referred to as MENA) since December 2010 have been indeed breath-taking. From Tunisia to Egypt, one autocratic regime is falling after another. In places like Yemen, Bahrain (despite brutal crackdowns), Algeria, Morocco, Iran, Saudi Arabia and more fiercely Libya and Syria, the working people, downtrodden; indeed the youth have given them quit notices wai ting for the sit-tights to vacate the rented palaces they have used the sweat, blood and flesh of these people to forcefully (and seemingly perpetually) occupy. Even in southern Saharan African countries like Djibouti, Uganda, Sudan, Senegal, Swaziland, etc, movements are breaking out, gaining inspiration from the mass struggles from the Maghreb mass movements2.
